TRB will conduct a webinar on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM ET that features research from the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP)’s Research Report 876: Guidelines for Integrating Safety and Cost-Effectiveness into Resurfacing, Restoration, and Rehabilitation (3R) Projects.

This webinar will present updated geometric design guidance for 3R projects. These guidelines present an approach for estimating the cost-effectiveness of a 3R project, including safety and operational improvements. Presenters will describe a benefit-cost, performance-based approach to determine how valuable a proposed design improvement is.

Some registrants will need to pay $95 to attend this webinar.  Sign into to view registration information.

Webinar Presenters

  • Doug Harwood, MRIGlobal
  • Daniel Cook, MRIGlobal
  • Priscilla Tobias, Arora and Associates

Moderated by:  Ray Derr, Transportation Research Board

Webinar Outline

  1. Overview of NCHRP
  1. Recommended performance-based approach to geometric design decisions for 3R projects
  2. How a performance-based approach differs from past use of dimensional geometric design criteria
  3. Which 3R projects should be resurfaced with or without accompanying geometric improvements, and what these geometric improvements include
  4. Application of spreadsheet-based benefit-cost analysis tools
  5. Question and answer session

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions. The Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP) categorizes this webinar activity as relating to health, safety, and welfare including core technical.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how to utilize a performance-based approach to design decision making for 3R projects
  • Determine how to assess which 3R projects should be resurfaced with accompanying geometric improvements and what those geometric improvements include
  • Describe how to apply spreadsheet-based benefit-cost analysis tools in making geometric design decisions for 3R projects

Professional Development Hour Information

A certificate for 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) will be provided to Professional Engineers (PEs) who register and attend the webinar as an individual. For groups, only the person that registers and attends the session will receive a PDH certificate. Certificates of Completion will be issued only to individuals who register for and attend the entire webinar session.

Individuals registered as Florida PEs are no longer required to email TRB with your license number to report your attendance. Instead, please use your certificate that TRB provides through as verification of your attendance to the Florida Board of Professional Engineers.

Please check with your licensing board to ensure that TRB webinar PDHs are approved by your board.

This webinar was developed in March 2018. TRB has met the standards and requirements of the Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP).
