Airports make every effort to minimize negative impacts and maximize benefits to their surrounding communities. TRB hosted a webinar on Monday, February 8, 2021 from 2:00 to 3:30 PM Eastern that aimed to help airport management make the most of their impact on the community. Airports conduct economic impact analyses, employment studies, and environmental studies. However, airports can gain a more complete understanding of the variables affecting their surrounding communities by measuring quality of life (QOL). Community QOL is a multi-dimensional concept that refers to a community’s perceived and actual well-being and position in life. It also reflects a broad range of indicators. Presenters discussed a tool that airports can use to assess community QOL. They described how it can help airports engage their communities, and inform airport decision-making to prioritize areas that the airport can influence and those that offer the greatest potential to improve.
The webinar featured research from ACRP Research Report 221: Measuring Quality of Life in Communities Surrounding Airports.
