Stabilization additives are used to increase the strength and stiffness of road foundations in weak and susceptible soils. Numerous additives exist for improving performance of aggregate base and subgrade layers. TRB hosted a webinar on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM Eastern that explored examples and case studies using conventional and nonconventional additives. Presenters discussed non-proprietary additives that are commonly used and alternative proprietary additives that are garnering new interest. Presenters also shared compaction methods to improve pavement foundation layers.

This webinar is a follow on to the TRB Annual Meeting Workshop: Performance of Stabilized Pavement Foundations With Conventional and Unconventional Stabilizers held on Friday, January 22, 2021.

This webinar was sponsored by the TRB Standing Technical Committees on Stabilization of Geomaterials and Recycled Materials, Transportation Earthworks, and Geotechnical Instrumentation and Modeling.

The slides and recording are available.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  • Sustainable pavement foundations with chemically stabilized quarry byproducts – Erol Tutumluer, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
  • Novel stabilization methods for sulfate soils using laboratory and field studies – Anand Puppala, Texas A&M University
  • Improving stabilized full depth reclamation with intelligent compaction – John Siekmeier, Minnesota Department of Transportation
  • Question and answer session moderated by Bora Cetin, Michigan State University

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Determine the impact of different stabilizers on geomechanical properties of pavement foundation geomaterials
  • Apply different stabilization techniques for pavement foundation improvement
