Details
TRB conducted a webinar on Monday, April 11, 2016, from 2:00-3:30PM ET that illustrated how measurements of asset value can lead to better inventory management and selection of interventions for bridge owners. The webinar described how bridge owners can optimize spending on a particular bridge as well as measure the performance for an entire inventory of bridges with the assistance of the Modified Health Index, a bridge value measurement tool.

This webinar was organized by the TRB Standing Committee on Bridge Preservation. Participants must register in advance of the webinar, and there is a fee for non-TRB Sponsor or non-TRB Sustaining Affiliate employees. A certificate for 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) will be provided to attendees who register and attend the webinar as an individual. Contact Reggie Gillum at RGillum@nas.edu for instructions on receiving a copy of the recorded webinar.

Here are the slides from the presentations.

Moderated by: Richard Thompson, Virginia Department of Transportation

Webinar Outline
  1. How bridge owners can use available data to:
    • Measure current value of bridges in their inventory
    • Estimate the increase in value for a range of maintenance/replacement interventions
    • Use action-effectiveness models and cost estimates to develop cost/benefit ratios
    • Use estimates of deterioration rates to develop long-term predictions of asset values for various alternatives
    • Use a time-value of money approach and long-term predictions of asset valuation to develop a life-cycle cost comparison for various alternatives
    • Use current valuation as a performance metric for measuring effectiveness of the decisions used to manage an inventory of bridges
  2. Question and answer session
The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions. The Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP) categorizes this webinar activity as relating to health, safety, and welfare including core technical.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, participants were able to:
  • Measure the current value of any bridge asset using readily available data
  • Predict the value of a structure after a particular repair
  • Predict the long-term value of structures depending on the maintenance, repair or replacement actions taken on the bridge
  • Understand how to use the current, near-term and long-term valuation to compare repair/replacement options to determine optimal investment based on life-cycle performance principles
