TRB will conduct a webinar on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM ET that features research from the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP)’s Report 839: A Performance-Based Highway Geometric Design Process.

This webinar will discuss a new process that incorporates advances in knowledge and addresses the realities of problems faced in highway design. The presenters will focus on the research findings, which propose that every phase, methodology, or model developed and applied to highway design and toward establishing highway design criteria should be objectively related to one or more measures of transportation performance.

Some registrants will need to pay a fee to attend this webinar. Sign into MyTRB.org to view registration information.

Webinar Presenters

  • Timothy Neuman, Bednar Consulting, Inc.
  • Richard Coakley, CH2M

Moderated by: Bart Thrasher, Virginia Department of Transportation

Webinar Outline

  1. Overview of NCHRP
  2. Geometric Highway Design Process for the 21st Century
    • Differences between  reconstruction projects and new alignment/new road projects
    • The evolution of highway design from a "standards based" approach to one that is performance based
    • Public policy framework encompassing environmental laws and regulations, and other regulations
    • Revision of design policies to be more performance based
  3. Question and answer session

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions. The Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP) categorizes this webinar activity as relating to health, safety, and welfare including core technical.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the historic evolution of design policies and project development, and how fundamental changes in the approach have become both possible as well as necessary
  • Identify the basic differences among new alignment projects, reconstruction projects, and resurfacing, restoration, and rehabilitation projects.
  • Understand how to objectively define the context of a project, and how that context influences the approach to highway design project development
  • Understand how to directly incorporate advances in the science of highway safety into project development

Professional Development Hour Information

A certificate for 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) will be provided to Professional Engineers (PEs) who register and attend the webinar as an individual. For groups, only the person that registers and attends the session will receive a PDH certificate. Certificates of Completion will be issued only to individuals who register for and attend the entire webinar session.

Individuals registered as Florida PEs are no longer required to email TRB with your license number to report your attendance. Instead, please use your certificate that TRB provides through RCEP.net as verification of your attendance to the Florida Board of Professional Engineers.

Please check with your licensing board to ensure that TRB webinar PDHs are approved by your board.

This webinar was developed in March 2017. TRB has met the standards and requirements of the Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP).
