Extreme weather events, such as hurricanes and flooding, increase the degradation of asphalt pavements. These impacts to transportation infrastructure have significantly increased over the last few decades and asphalt pavements have had to become more resilient as a result. TRB hosted a webinar on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM Eastern that addressed the impact of climate change and weather events on the performance and degradation of asphalt pavements. Presenters offered strategies for materials and methods to use in the design, production, and construction of pavements that will be resilient and flexible enough to withstand the elements.

This webinar was sponsored by the TRB Standing Technical Committee on Asphalt Mixture Evaluation and Performance. It follows Lecturn Session 1401 Resilience of Asphalt Pavement Structures as presented at TRB’s 2022 Annual Meeting.

The slides are available. Please contact trbwebinar@nas.edu for a link to the recording. There may be a $90 fee.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  • National Asphalt Pavement Association’s effort toward resilient and flexible pavements – Joseph Shacat, NAPA
  • Federal Highway Administration’s initiatives toward more resilient and flexible pavements – Amir Golalipour, FHWA
  • Climate change and factors to consider in the design of resilient and flexible pavement structures – Benjamin Bowers, Auburn University
  • Question and answer session moderated by Louay Mohammad, Louisiana State University & Louisiana Transportation Research Center

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify key factors to enhance resiliency of asphalts pavements, specifically, materials and methods used in the design, production, and construction of flexible pavements
  • Implement proposed practices to enhance resiliency, durability and performance of asphalt pavements
