TRB conducted a webinar on Thursday, October 27, 2016 from 2:00 to 4:00PM ET that summarized recent research on rear seat safety and seat belt use. This webinar enumerated the injury and fatality statistics of rear seat passengers with and without seatbelts, and how these passengers can contribute to the risk to other passengers in the vehicle. This webinar also focused on challenges and strategies to improve rear seat belt use in various communities.

This webinar was organized by the TRB Standing Committee on Occupant Protection. This webinar is based on the following resources:

• A paper released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
• A paper prepared for the Governors Highway Safety Association
• A paper authored by researchers at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

• Describe how rear seat safety varies for adults and children by occupant, vehicle, and crash characteristics
• Develop strategies to increase rear seat belt use in their communities
• Describe the impact of legislative initiatives aimed at improving rear-seated occupant restraint use
• List potential strategies for increasing belt use, and plan how they can increase rear belt use in their communities
