TRB released a series of recordings in December 2018 that identifies how augmented reality can assist state departments of transportation and other owners of critical infrastructure to collect data from the field more accurately and cost-effectively. Augmented reality has the potential to equip experienced inspectors with machine capabilities by increasing their reach and ability to compare structures across time and space. This may improve the effectiveness of inspections and data collection while enhancing safety. Presenters will describe past and current applications and results using augmented reality for structural inspections. They will also explore research on augmented reality, illustrate a method of digital documentation, and identify other applications where augmented reality can benefit transportation.
