TRB Straight to Recording: Roadway Infrastructure Facts for Automated Vehicle Developers

Date Recorded
09/20/2023
Description

Roadway infrastructure, life cycle, and costs are significantly greater than that of a vehicle. The automated vehicle (AV) driver will need to sense and respond to the existing roadway infrastructure. Where is it? What is it? Why is it there? If the AV driver’s task is too difficult to accomplish, when is it realistic to ask for infrastructure changes?

Knowing where infrastructure data and standards can be found and understanding how human factors affect the development of roadway infrastructure will aide automated vehicle developers in their work and create a framework for understanding when it may be reasonable to ask for infrastructure modification.

This straight to recording was sponsored by TRB’s Standing Technical Committees on Performance Effects of Geometric Design, Vehicle Highway Automation, and Traffic Control Devices.

Agenda and Presenters

  • Design guides and standards: AASHTO/FHWA – Brian Toombs, Burgess & Niple
  • Design guides and regulations: MUTCD/ITE Traffic Engineering Handbook – Paul Carlson, Automated Roads
  • Human factors aspects of infrastructure design and AV development – John Campbell, Exponent
  • Infrastructure owner operator perspective – Roxane Mukai, Maryland Transportation Authority
  • Question and answer session moderated by Tara Andringa, PAVE Campaign

The first 70 minutes of the webinar are for presentations and the final 20 minutes feature a question and answer session.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, you will be able to:

  • Identify the standard roadway design guides (AASHTO Design Guides, MUTCD, Traffic Engineering Handbook)
  • Identify critical road infrastructure elements
  • Identify the minimum and maximum measures of road infrastructure elements to assess whether an AV Driver will perceive and respond appropriately
