TRB will conduct a webinar on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM ET that will discuss how to use spatial modeling and statistical tools to enhance the quality and productivity of travel monitoring data. Presenters will focus on the Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS), which is a compilation of roadway characteristics, including inventory, traffic, and performance data. They will describe how to visualize the spatial data and provide tips about generating HPMS data. This is the second webinar in a two-part series; the first webinar takes place on February 27, 2018.

This webinar was organized by the TRB Standing Committee on Geographic Information Science and Applications.

  • Dan Seedah, Texas A&M Transportation Institute
  • Stephen Cropley, Transmetric America, Inc.

Moderated by:  Coco Briseno, California Department of Transportation

Webinar Outline

  1. Incorporating validation rules during processing travel data to minimize errors
  2. Visualizing the spatial data
  3. Efficient structuring of raw travel data
  4. Advanced statistical models
  5. Ramp balancing
  6. Some tips on HPMS data generation
  7. Preparation of summary results
  8. Question and answer session

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions. The Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP) categorizes this webinar activity as relating to health, safety, and welfare including core technical.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the HPMS travel data validation rules and create pseudo-code queries that incorporate HPMS based validation rules
  • Understand how to apply standard visualizing tools for the purpose of highlighting and identification of potential problems
  • Understand the need to balance multimodal solutions within the system
  • Understand how to create HPMS data items and summary data using a relational database

Professional Development Hour Information

A certificate for 2.0 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) will be provided to Professional Engineers (PEs) who register and attend the webinar as an individual. For groups, only the person that registers and attends the session will receive a PDH certificate. Certificates of Completion will be issued only to individuals who register for and attend the entire webinar session.

Individuals registered as Florida PEs are no longer required to email TRB with your license number to report your attendance. Instead, please use your certificate that TRB provides through RCEP.net as verification of your attendance to the Florida Board of Professional Engineers.

Please check with your licensing board to ensure that TRB webinar PDHs are approved by your board.
