TRB will conduct a webinar on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM ET that features research from the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP)’s Research Report 882: How Weather Affects the Noise You Hear from Highways.

This webinar will discuss how meteorology affects the sound adjacent to highways. Presenters will describe the quantitative research and the results of the report. They will also discuss public outreach materials that state highway agencies can use to screen for meteorological influences and explain the effects to the public.

Some registrants will need to pay $95 to attend this webinar.  Sign into MyTRB.org to view registration information.

Webinar Presenters

  1. Overview of NCHRP
  1. Highway noise as a quality of life and health issue
  2. Background on regulatory environment around highway noise
  3. The effects of wind, temperature, and humidity on highway noise propagation
  4. Review of data collection at the field site in Arizona
  5. Summary of research results
  6. Communication and outreach materials
  7. Question and answer session

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions. The Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP) categorizes this webinar activity as relating to health, safety, and welfare including core technical.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how meteorology, primarily vertical changes in temperature and wind, increases or decreases sound levels adjacent to roadways
  • Evaluate the implications for noise barrier effectiveness
  • Describe how state highway agencies can use the results of this research, including specific tools, to effectively explain those effects to the public

Professional Development Hour Information

A certificate for 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) will be provided to Professional Engineers (PEs) who register and attend the webinar as an individual. For groups, only the person that registers and attends the session will receive a PDH certificate. Certificates of Completion will be issued only to individuals who register for and attend the entire webinar session.
