The transportation sector is advancing towards full digital product delivery and digital as-built objectives within civil infrastructure. This transformation is driven by the goal of a fully end-to-end digital, asset-centric, interoperable data flow. However, current methodologies still rely on outdated concepts, such as 2D/1D plans and profile/cross-section sheets, which are disconnected from modern construction goals that demand the integration of open building information modeling (BIM) and digital twin technologies. To effectively achieve these goals, it's essential to address the existing geospatial and geodesic inconsistencies between real-world conditions and virtual 3D models. TRB will host a webinar on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM Eastern that will raise awareness within the department of transportation (DOT) community about the critical need to resolve ambiguities between virtual 3D models and real-world conditions.
This webinar is sponsored by TRB’s Standing Technical Committee on Geospatial Data Acquisition Technologies and the subcommittee on Geospatial and Geodetic Aspects of Building Informational Modeling.
Registration is free for employees of TRB sponsors as well as Titanium and Cobalt Global Affiliates. The registration rate for all other attendees is $100. Sign into MyTRB.org to view registration information. Contact Patrice Davenport to inquire about becoming a TRB sponsor or global affiliate organization.
A recording will be sent to all registrants after the webinar.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  • DOT perspective: What happens if we stay on the current path and the importance of resolving the ambiguities – Brett Wood, Florida Department of Transportation
  • Digital product delivery perspective: Identifying needs to address to develop integrated digital data workflows that resolve ambiguities – Ron Grant, Infotech
  • Survey and geodesy perspective: Explaining the ambiguities between the 3D virtual model, the real world, and GNSS technology – David Zilkoski, CEO Geospatial Solutions by DBZ
  • Question and answer session moderated by Curtis Clabaugh, ESP Associates, Inc.

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Address and accommodate the adoption of current 3D CADD technology with an awareness of the associated limitations
  • Understand how ambiguities will cause problems with the digital delivery process and create inefficiencies in future asset operations and maintenance
  • Resolve ambiguities to provide a solid real world reference frame foundation that supports digital delivery to operations and maintenance that involves automation technologies in conjunction with analytical simulation and modeling

Professional Development Hours
Professional engineers (PEs) who register and attend the entire webinar as an individual will be awarded 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). TRB’s webinar program awards PDH credits only to the registered individual, and not to other members of a group that view the webinar together. To be eligible for the credits, individuals must remain signed in for the entire webinar, including for any question and answer session following the presentations.
This webinar will be delivered as a scheduled – e-learning live event and is categorized within RCEP as Technical, Health and Safety.
Please check with your licensing board to ensure that TRB webinar PDHs are approved by your board.
TRB will report credits earned to the Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP). Complaints about registered providers may be sent to RCEP, 1015 15th Street, NW, 8th Floor, Washington, D.C., 20005.

Pre-registration is required. Once the webinar starts, you will be unable to register. Individuals that are registered for a webinar but do not receive their confirmation emails due to their organization’s internal firewalls should contact TRB Helpdesk for assistance in signing in.
