Following 2021 Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidance on non-destructive testing (NDT) of fracture-critical members fabricated with Grade 100 steel, bridge inspectors need updated strategies to effectively assess and preserve these structures. TRB hosted a webinar on Thursday, July 24, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM Eastern with case studies demonstrating how non-destructive evaluation (NDE) results can inform bridge preservation decision-making. Presenters shared examples of applying NDE to evaluate Grade 100 steel during long-term structural monitoring. Attendees learned about project procurement, scoping, work progression, key findings, and lessons learned, including critical considerations and challenges encountered throughout the projects.
The slides are available.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  • Kentucky NDT of Grade 100 steel – James Edmunds, KYTC
  • NDE and remediation plans for T-1 steel members – Jason Stith, Michael Baker International
  • Use of NDE to assess, evaluate, and validate welds in T-1 steel – Jen Laning, Gannett Fleming TranSystems
  • Question and answer session moderated by Hoda Azari, FHWA

The first 60 minutes of the webinar were for presentations and the final 30 minutes were reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, participants can:

  • Explain how NDE techniques are integrated into the bridge preservation decision-making process, with a focus on structures fabricated with Grade 100 steel
