Accurately diagnosing the causes of crashes allows transportation professionals to select the most effective countermeasures. TRB hosted a webinar on Tuesday, November 4, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM Eastern that presented tools and methods for conducting diagnostic assessments and selecting countermeasures within the Safe System framework. The session emphasized the importance of understanding human factors, behavioral influences, roadway conditions, and user interactions when choosing treatments to address crash types and road user needs. Presenters discussed how to differentiate between human factors and driver behavior issues, assess contributing factors to crashes, and identify countermeasures that align with underlying causes.
This webinar was based on NCHRP Report 1111 & BTSCRP Report 12: Diagnostic Assessment and Countermeasure Selection: A Toolbox for Traffic Safety Practitioners.
This webinar was sponsored by TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program and Behavioral Traffic Safety Cooperative Research Program.
